Awesome article! They're amazing birds and I love how regal and elegant they look. They are FEISTY! Banding them years ago was always a treat. They were so indignant at such rude treatment and also very poised and royal. Amazing birds. I love that they eat berries all winter, who knew?
No, they can't turn their heads around as far as owls can. They're similar to starlings in that they are both part of the passerine (songbird) family but they're in a different subgroup that has much less complex vocalizations (starlings are incredible mimics/songsters). And they depend more on insects during the breeding season. They're lovely birds!
That red spot is so rarely visible, but it's striking when you see it! They flash it most often when they're agitated or involved in courtship activities.
I have never seen that red patch on the crest as I usually am just catching glimpses of them perched on telephone wires and fence posts. They are regal indeed!! And, I didn’t know they ate berries either!!Thank you for the reminder about window decals….it is truly awful to hear that ‘thunk’ as you know immediately what it is! Wonderful article!! 💜💚💙

I was surprised to learn about the berry eating, too! Thinking about their different behavior in the tropics has made me appreciate them all the more!
I'm so glad this story ended well! As always, beautiful and engaging writing!
Thank you, Micki!! I love a happy ending!
Are these birds able to turn their heads around like owls? They seem similar to starlings!

I had no idea about the red spot. I see them often. I will watch for it!

Great informative article Sophie! I love a happy ending!
I love a happy ending too! And this one was a HUGE relief! I would have been tormented by guilt if it hadn't had a happy outcome!
