Another wonderful piece! For those of us who truly watch birds, the myriad of behaviors, variety of colors, and diversity of species is absolutely stunning. I hope the world wakes up to how amazing birds are and how lucky we are to share our planet with the before it's too late!
Great article, Sophie! I’m not sure what my initial spark bird was, but my spark book about birds was David Attenborough‘s The Life of Birds, which dazzled me with so many amazing and fun facts about birds.
Thanks, Brandon! I loved hearing about your spark book! : ) I'm not sure I had a spark book, but one of the earliest, most formative books for me and one that opened up my eyes to the possibilities of traveling to see new birds was Pete Dunne's The Feather Quest. Birds and books! Such a great combination!
Crayfish eaters!!! 🤗🤗🤗 I got to watch them eating crawdads in a Montana lake in 2021. Such a treat (for them and me!). Thanks for teaching me new things about duck nesting habits!
It is amazing how the more you look at birds, the more you learn! Ducks have some of the craziest displays but I love that you highlighted the more subtle ones as well. Wonderful post and beautifully written as always!
Oh Sophie, as always, what a treat to read!! I love your vivid description of the mergansers and of the subtle and not so subtle courtship behaviors of both species. But I perhaps love your last evocative and beautifully written paragraph most of all! Thank you, once again!
Thank YOU for the kind words, Diane! I'm so glad you enjoyed the post--and especially the last paragraph. I'd struggled with how to end the post and thought I'd dropped the ball on it, so your kind words were so reassuring!

Another beautiful post for awakening to the world of birds, especially ducks! Thank you Sophie!
Lovely as always, Sophie.
